Globalisation is the worldwide integration between countries and the removal of national boundaries. In the past, we lived in a world full of ‘imagined communities’ due to time and distant barriers, however, globalisation has allowed us the opportunity to see different cultures and communities from a first hand experience. The introduction of new and advanced technologies has enabled these barrier breakdowns. An example of these technological advances is social media. Social media has immensely impacted globalisation and has greatly increased communication between countries.
The popular media platform, Snapchat, founded in 2011 by three university students, has presented a range of features that have essentially changed the way we experience different cultures around the world. One of these features being, ‘Snapchat Live Stories’.
“Live Stories are a curated stream of user submitted Snaps from various locations and events. Users who have their location services on at the same event location will be given the option to contribute Snaps to the Live Story. The end result is a Story told from a community perspective with lots of different points view.”- Snapchat Support
Events such as Australia Day, Independence Day, New Years Eve, Independence Day Pakistan, Chinese Lantern Festival, Running with the Bulls and many more are featured on the application for all to see and introduces a first hand experience to the viewers. Snapchat allows one to personally curate their own content which is why this specific social media platform differs greatly from others; we do not just get filtered and edited information such as what we may get from television and radio networks, but instead are getting the content straight from the source. Snapchat has allowed a number of cultural transactions to happen between individuals, communities and countries. Other technologies have also increased the level of communication between people across the globe. Medias such as Face Time, Email, messaging, telephones, Skype and many more enable us to connect with others no matter where they are or what they are doing, limiting the obstacles that were previously faced such as time and distance barriers.
Through the access of new technologies, we have formed a global community, a community that is increasingly integrating more and more daily. We have been introduced to unique cultural experiences and large-scaled interactions, than we have been in the past. Although there are also negative aspects in globalisation, such as losing cultural identity, where we as a global cultural system are emerging together.
Globalisation has opened the world up to an endless amount of opportunities and experiences in which we can truly embrace diversity. Advanced technologies such as social media platforms allow us a variety of perspectives and viewpoints from all around the world. Snapchat is an example of one of the ways we can interact on a global scale and view differing perspectives through someone else’s eyes. By watching content taken around the world we are given the chance to expand our understanding of cultural identity and sense of community. Globalisation has allowed us advantages that in the past we could not experience but has essentially brought people together worldwide.
